Tudor Britain - Elizabeth I

1. Elizabeth was born at Greenwich on 7th September 1533, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

2. Her mother was beheaded when Elizabeth was two.

3. Elizabeth was brought up in the care of governesses at Hatfield House.

4. Elizabeth’s early life full of uncertainties and her chances of succession to the throne seemed slight as she was third in line.

5. Elizabeth narrowly escaped execution following a failed rebellion against Queen Mary in 1554.

6. Elizabeth was well-educated, fluent in six languages and could play several musical instruments.

7. She was intelligent, determined, quick-witted, shrewd, ruthless and very vain.

8. She became Queen Elizabeth I in 1558, following the death of half-sister, Mary.

9. Elizabeth loved extravagant, luxurious clothes and jewellery.

10. As as a young woman, Elizabeth been taught the art of public speaking, which came in very useful during her reign.

11. Elizabeth I’s forty-five year reign generally considered to be one of the most glorious in English history.

12. She was a wise and successful leader who was extremely popular with her people.

13. The Spanish Armada was defeated and the country prospered during her reign.

14. She encouraged many voyages of discovery and arts and architecture flourished.

15. Elizabeth had astute political judgement and chose her ministers well.

16. Elizabeth I executed Mary, Queen of Scots, due to the threat she posed to the stability of England.

17. Elizabeth I never married.

18. Elizabeth I died at Richmond Palace in 1603.

19. She was succeeded by James VI of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots.
