Howard Carter

1. Howard Carter was born 1874 in London.

2. Howard Carter was interested in Egyptian antiquities and visited Egypt when he was seventeen, becoming interested in archaeology.

3. Howard Carter was appointed Chief Inspector of Antiquities for the Egyptian Government in 1901.

4. Howard Carter resigned in 1905 following a dispute.

5. Howard Carter met with Lord Carnarvon, who was visiting Egypt for health reasons.

6. Lord Carnarvon wanted to finance an archaeological dig and Howard Carter was chosen to work with him.

7. Both men were keen to find a new tomb.

8. They started digging in Thebes in 1909.

9. In 1914 they were given permission to dig in the Valley of the Kings, but due to the outbreak of war, little was done until 1917.

10. By 1922 money was running out, then on 4th November, the first steps leading to the tomb of Tutankhamun were discovered.

11. The steps were discovered hidden under some ancient workmen's houses.

12. The steps were the beginning of a flight of steps which led to a sealed door.

13. When the sealed door was opened it led to a corridor filled with rubble, the rubble was cleared and revealed another sealed door.

14. Howard Carter hammered a small hole through the wall - he saw the antechamber containing many treasures.

15. Work on the clearance and recording of the tomb continued until 1929.

16. Howard Carter wrote a book in three volumes called ‘The Tomb of Tutankhamun’, which was published between 1923-33.

17. Howard Carter never returned to field archaeology once he had found the tomb, but collected Ancient Egyptian artefacts instead.

18. Howard Carter died in London in 1939.
