Ancient Egyptian Gods

1. Large number of Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses.

2. Ancient Egyptians believed that there was one god, older and more powerful than the rest, who had made all the others.

3. The Egyptian creator god, sometimes known as Atum, was wise, good and immortal.

4. The most important Egyptian gods had their own temples and priests.

5. Anubis was the jackal-headed God of the Dead.

6. Anubis led dead souls to the Judgement Hall and weighed their hearts against a feather.

7. Horus was the falcon-headed God of the Sky.

8. Horus protected the pharaohs, his wings spanned the earth and his eyes were the stars.

9. Khepri, was associated with scarab beetles, which roll balls of dung in front of them.

10. In Egyptian myths, Khepri is shown as a dung beetle pushing the sun across the sky.

11. Osiris was the King of the Egyptian Underworld.

12. Osiris was associated with death and was sometimes shown as a mummy with his hands coming out of the bandages.

13. One of Osiris’ most important jobs was to oversee the trial whereby dead souls were allowed into the Egyptian Afterlife.

14. Thoth was the God of Writing and Knowledge.

15. Thoth is shown as a baboon or an Isis, a sacred bird.

16. Thoth is frequently illustrated writing, or recording a calculation, and noted down the proceedings at the trial for the Egyptian Afterlife.

17. Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses could change their shapes at will and take on animal forms.

18. Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses were not all perfect and could sometimes be cruel or violent.
