Roman Britain - Julius Caesar

1. Julius Caesar was born in Rome in 100 BC.

2. He came from a wealthy family and was well-educated.

3. He joined the army in 81 BC and was a brilliant general, whose men were very loyal to him.

4. Julius Caesar was an ambitious man.

5. He became a consul and a governor of Gaul for eight years.

6. He added the whole of France and Belgium to the Roman Empire.

7. Julius Caesar was the first Roman army commander to invade Britain in 55 BC and 54 BC.

8. He won a great many battles and his fame within the Roman Empire made him very powerful.

9. Julius Caesar had created many enemies and, after he returned to Rome from invading Britain, civil war broke out.

10. He defeated his enemies, but, to show how generous he was, forgave them.

11. Julius Caesar was elected consul of the Roman Empire.

12. He changed the way Rome was ruled, carrying out many reforms.

13. People did not approve of the changes he made.

14. In 45 BC Julius Caesar was made dictator of Rome for life and the month of July was named in his honour.

15. People became very jealous of the power he had.

16. In March 44 BC, a group of senators, led by Cassius and Caesar’s adopted son, Brutus, murdered him.
