River Nile

1. The River Nile is the longest river in the world.

2. It is about 6670 km long.

3. The River Nile gets its name from Greek word neilos meaning valley, or river valley.

4. The source of the River Nile is the Ruvyironza River in Burundi and it flows to the Mediterranean Sea.

5. The River Nile is formed from two rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile.

5. The source of the Blue Nile is in Lake Tana, Ethiopia, that of the White Nile is in Lake Victoria.

6. The Blue Nile and White Nile meet in Khartoum, Sudan and form the Nile.

7. Together the rivers pass through nine countries.

8. Egypt has been called the ‘Gift of the Nile’, because without the river, the country would have struggled to exist.

10. The Ancient Egyptians lived near the River Nile because the soil was so fertile.

11. The River Nile flooded every year between June and September.

12. The flood left a thick deposit of silt which made excellent soil.

13. The River Nile also provided the Ancient Egyptians with reeds, fish and birds and good trade routes.

14. Nilometers were built to monitor the changes in the water level of the River Nile.

15. Some were simple columns placed in the river, others huge stone staircases.

16. Traditional wooden sailing boats called feluccas have been used on the River Nile for thousands of years.

17. The River Nile is home to perch, catfish, crocodiles, hippopotami, soft-shelled turtles, lizards and snakes.

18. It is a great tourist attraction with many cruises running on it.

19. The Aswan Dam opened in 1970.

20. This meant that the flood could be controlled, water could be stored and electricity could be generated.

21. When the dam was built, a huge reservoir formed behind it called Lake Nasser.

22. Important monuments, such as the temple at Abu Simbel had to be moved.

23. 10,000 people had to move home, when the dam was built.

24. The Nile Delta is 190 km wide.

25. The delta is formed by the division of the Nile as it approaches the sea.

26. It spreads out in a V-shaped fan beginning north of Cairo.

27. Many people live on the delta as it contains the largest cities, after Cairo, and the richest farmland.
