Christianity - Life of Jesus

1. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a young Galilean woman who lived in Nazareth and was engaged to the local carpenter, Joseph.

2. She was told by the angel Gabriel that she would give birth to God’s son.

3. Just before the birth, they had to travel to Bethlehem to be counted for a census ordered by the Roman Emperor.

4. When they arrived, everywhere was full and the baby was due, so an innkeeper let them use his stable.

5. Jesus was born in the stable and was visited by shepherds and three wise men bearing gifts.

6. Following Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt to escape King Herod.

7. Herod, having heard that a new king had been born, had ordered all new born babies to be killed.

8. When Herod died, Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth.

9. Jesus was brought up in Nazareth and learned to be a carpenter.

10. At the age of thirty, Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan by John the Baptist.

11. As Jesus was baptised, God sent his spirit down from heaven, in the form of a dove, to show that he was pleased with his son.

12. Jesus recruited twelve disciples to help him spread the word of God, travelling for about three years.

13. The disciples were ordinary men, chosen carefully so they could carry on Jesus’ teachings when he had gone.

14. Unfortunately, one of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, betrayed Jesus.

15. Jesus helped people to live good lives.

16. He made sick people well, performed many miracles and told many famous stories called parables.

17. The country’s rulers became worried that Jesus was becoming too popular and persuaded Judas to betray him.

18. After eating a last supper with his disciples, Jesus went to pray at the Garden of Gethsemane.

19. Judas brought Jesus’ enemies to the garden to arrest him.

20. Jesus was sent to trial before the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate.

21. They decided to kill Jesus by crucifying him on a cross.

22. At the moment Jesus died, the sky went dark and the earth shook.

23. Jesus’ friends took his body, laid it in a tomb cut in the rock and sealed it with a large stone.

24. Two days later, a friend visited the tomb and found the body gone; Jesus had risen from the dead.

25. Jesus appeared to his disciples several times before going to his father in heaven.
